The conference was held from 5 to 7 July 2023 at the University of Girona.

Under the slogan “Towards a sustainable, innovative and digital health system”, the scientific program of the conference aimed to focus on the most relevant challenges and opportunities of the new post-Covid era, taking up priorities prior to the pandemic and using the lessons learned in the last two years. Specifically, over three days, papers were presented, experiences were shared and knowledge was transferred on digitalization and the data revolution as the great levers of change in the National Health System. Researchers, managers, and health professionals focused on discussing innovation and sustainability of systems, comparing international models of health technology assessment, and analyzing the role of cost information in management.

Possible solutions to complex issues were addressed, such as the promotion of innovative models of integrated care to address the growing multimorbidity and possible responses to the management of diseases closely related to longevity, such as dementia. In this context, the Scientific Director of Biosistemak Institute (formerly Kronikgune), Ane Fullaondo, took part in the round table “Integrated care models: bridging the gap between health and social care”.

Biosistemak (formerly Kronikgune) has also been present in other sessions of the annual AES conference. Borja García-Lorenzo, Health Economist at Biosistemak, presented two papers framed within the VOICE community, Health Outcomes of value-based medicine: experiences of the VOICE Community in breast cancer, and Disentangling the Value Equation: A Step Forward in Value-Based Health Care (VBHC). In the first paper, the first coordinated international experience on Value-Based Medicine that provides health and economic outcomes for use in benchmarking was shared. The benchmarking carried out in VOICE is the initial evidence that should allow health centers to exchange best practices to improve their healthcare model through the eyes of the patient, taking into account their point of view. In the second paper, the proposed methodology for combining Patient-Centred Outcomes in the context of breast cancer and providing a single figure for the numerator of the value equation introduced by Porter et al. to determine VBHC was presented.
