This programme aims to contribute to the development of Africa through the promotion of women. The Foundation Women for Africa (FMxA) has recently launched the 9th edition of the programme SCIENCE BY WOMEN with the aim of promoting the leadership of African women in scientific research, encouraging technology transfer and improving the capacity of research centres in their countries of origin. The programme aims to contribute to the empowerment of African women researchers and scientists to address the major challenges that are facing Africa through research in health and biomedicine, sustainable agriculture and food security, water, energy and climate change.

“Science by women” is framed by the limitation that African women face in developing their professional careers due to social, structural and economic barriers, which in turn limit their ability to address the major challenges facing the continent. In this regard, gender disparities in science and technology, both in the public and private spheres, affect the African population as a whole. The programme aims to empower African women researchers to play a leading role in Africa’s transition to a knowledge-based, innovation-driven economy by developing products, processes, services and technologies that impact people’s lives.

The FMxA collaborates with Spanish centres of excellence to ensure excellence in scientific research. Biosistemak (formerly Kronikgune) has participated in previous editions by hosting African researchers at its centre to develop their project for six months.
