Description:

The ageing population is one of Europe’s most serious challenges. Current demographic changes imply an increase in demand of healthcare and of the derived expenses such as the dispensation of drugs, the care of the ageing population, and new technologies. However, European healthcare systems currently lack the resources to meet this demand.

Preventive care can help reduce spending on healthcare. Early identification of symptoms can be done by recognising behavioural patterns (including physical and social activity) and patient communication. Said patterns are identified by analysing large volumes of data collected by sensors, non-invasive medical devices, domestic sensors, etc., and by applying smart algorithms. Artificial Intelligence (AI) is used to process these large amounts of data using “Machine Learning”, “Deep Learning”, and “Neural Networks”. For their part, algorithmic solutions can find hidden trends and patterns, and predict expected future performance of a phenomenon or disease/disability.

Gatekeeper seeks to provide evidence in terms of quality of care and health outcomes, through the massive use of data via AI technologies, Big Data, and data analytics. All this to achieve early diagnosis of diseases and disabilities, understand symptoms and facilitate constant and personalised monitoring.

General project aim:

Gatekeeper‘s main goal is to provide an open, standard-based, interoperational and safe framework, which is available for all the agents, and create digital solutions for early detection and development of personalised interventions. This will harness all the potential of new technologies to improve the social-healthcare services that are provided to an increasingly older population.

Specific project aims:

  • Create new tools and smart algorithms that perform complex analytical tasks based on Big Data, Machine Learning and Artificial Intelligence.
  • Study, through Visual Analytical techniques, large volumes of data retrieved from different types of sensors (medical devices, IoT, smart household devices, etc.) to identify behavioural patterns.
  • Use modern AI and Big Data practices to detect variations in critical parameters and determine correlations.
  • Contribute to the global understanding of symptoms and early diagnosis of diseases and disabilities.
  • Define risk factors related to health and treatment compliance.
  • Facilitate continuous and personalised monitoring to enable healthy ageing and well-being.
  • Train the elderly to stay healthy with respect to their optimal functional capacity over time.

Work methodology: Divided into work packages – project lasting 42 months

  • 1: Project coordination, intellectual property and ethical management (Month 1 – Month 42)
  • 2: Ecosystem value, co-creation, open calls and scaling through twinnings (Month 1 – Month 42)
  • 3: Reference architecture of the IoT (“Internet of things”) (Month 1 – Month 24)
  • 4: Management, infrastructure and development of things (Month 3 – Month 40)
  • 5: Integration through “Plug and Play”, dynamic intervention services (Month 6 – Month 42)
  • 6: Cases, early detection and interventions (Month 1 – Month 36)
  • 7: Definition and execution of large-scale pilots (Month 1 – Month 42)
  • 8: Standardisation and certification mechanisms (Month 1 – Month 36)
  • 9: Dissemination, communication, exploitation and sustainability (Month 1 – Month 42)

Expected results:

  • Development of a European platform to promote a smart, healthy and independent life at home.
  • Increase competitiveness of the European ICT industry, by improving interoperability, and identifying best practices for viable business and financing models, and scalable markets.
  • Creation of relationships and synergies between Member States and European regions.
  • Improvement of evidence-based efficiency of healthcare systems, by using underlying tools and technologies.
  • Improvement of the quality of life and health status of the users and caregivers involved, by means of underlying technologies.
  • Development of innovative user-accepted and validated solutions that address accessibility, privacy, security, vulnerability, liability and trust in connected data spaces.

Role of Kronikgune in the project:

Kronikgune and Osakidetza shall focus on piloting two cases:

  • Intervention related to healthy lifestyles in the elderly population: analysis techniques for large quantities of data will be implemented to address risk stratification and early detection and provision of digital coaching.
  • Addressing multimorbid and polymedicated patients: innovative solutions shall be developed to increase the treatment commitment of polymedicated patients and to avoid the adverse reactions deriving from the medication.
