Prescribe a Healthy Lifestyle project

Prescribe a Healthy Lifestyle project

The Ministry of Health, Social Services and Equality has been giving the NAOS Strategy Awards (Nutrition, Physical Activity and Obesity Prevention) since 2009. These awards recognise and identify programmes and projects that help to prevent obesity by promoting a healthy diet and/or physical activity.

On 30 March 2017 the jury of the 10th NAOS Strategy Awards unanimously gave the NAOS Strategy Award for Health Care to the Prescribe a Healthy Lifestyle (“Prescribe Vida Saludable (PVS)” in spanish) project developed by the Bizkaia Primary Care Research Unit of Osakidetza, the Basque Health Service. This award recognises the hard work of more than 100 professionals at Osakidetza on this project.

Prescribe a Healthy Lifestyle was designed as an innovative programme after it was detected that the population does not lead a healthy life in general. A strategy was devised to optimise the integration of health promotion into Primary and Community Care. The aim was to develop and incorporate innovative health promotion programmes to encourage people to change their lifestyle by promoting physical activity and a healthy diet, and helping them to stop smoking.

The programme has been implemented in various Osakidetza organisations, and several different entities and institutions working in the community have taken part, from social agents to pharmacies, sports centres, councils and companies. The programme managed to convey a message to the population and join forces to address the need to lead a healthier life.

The award will be given at a prize ceremony as part of the 11th NAOS Convention, which will take place in early November 2017.

Congratulations to everyone involved in this project!
