The ADLIFE project will evaluate the effectiveness, socio-economic impact and implementation of a digital solution for patients with advanced chronic diseases.

ADLIFE, coordinated at the European level by Kronikgune and funded by the European Commission, addresses the increased use of healthcare resources and the burden of care for people with advanced chronic diseases. ADLIFE is a digital solution that provides the patient, caregiver and healthcare professionals with digital, integrated and personalised care, supporting shared clinical decisions and fostering independence and self-management. The ADLIFE intervention aims to slow down the functional deterioration of the patient, guarantee their quality of life and promote shared decision-making while reducing the burden on the caregiver, improving the working conditions of the team of healthcare professionals and optimising the use of healthcare resources.

The ADLIFE intervention, a quasi-experimental, multicentre, non-randomised and controlled trial, will be carried out in seven pilot centres with different characteristics: Basque Country (Osakidetza), United Kingdom (National Health Service Lanarkshire and University Hospitals Coventry & Warwickshire National Health Service Trust), Denmark (Odense University Hospital), Germany (Gesunder Werra-Meißner Kreis), Sweden (Region Jämtland Härjedalen) and Israel (Assuta Ashdod Hospital – Maccabi Healthcare Services Southern Region).

The ADLIFE evaluation protocol published in the International Journal of Environmental Research and Public Health (Q1; IF: 4.6) describes the evaluation design that will be carried out to analyse the effectiveness, implementation and acceptance of the technology, as well as the socio-economic impact, compared to routine clinical practice. A mixed approach using quantitative and qualitative methods will be implemented. This article lays the groundwork for providing future scientific evidence to support decision-making on its adoption by healthcare systems in routine clinical practice.
