Biosistemak is part of the EU Expert Group to move towards a more sustainable healthcare system
The institute’s director, Ane Fullaondo, joins the PHSSR (Partnership for Health System Sustainability and Resilience) project as an expert consultant.
Biosistemak, under the direction of Ane Fullaondo Zabala, continues to work towards the transformation of European health systems, this time through its participation in the European Union (EU) Expert Advisory Group of the PHSSR (Partnership for Health System Sustainability and Resilience) project. In this framework, it has announced the expansion of the advisory group to include new experts in health policy and health financing, contributing to the development of innovative and sustainable solutions for Europe’s health systems.
Responding to global challenges
Despite previous efforts to strengthen health policy in the EU, Member States continue to face tight national budgets, which complicates the allocation of sufficient funds for health. In addition, other political priorities, such as defence, migration and EU enlargement, are expected to dominate the political agenda and spending in the coming years. In parallel, health systems face growing challenges such as climate change, economic instability and emerging diseases, underlining the urgent need to find sustainable financing solutions at EU level to improve the care provided to people.
The PHSSR EU Expert Advisory Group works to identify priority policies and develop agreed recommendations to help EU Member States access financing mechanisms that strengthen and make their health systems more resilient. These policies focus on ensuring that health systems not only survive, but also thrive in the face of current and future challenges.
A look ahead: the policy brief
This partnership will culminate in the publication of a policy report, due in spring 2025, which will provide practical, consensus-based recommendations on how EU countries can improve the sustainability and resilience of their health systems. This report will be a key tool to ensure that health financing is adequate and aligned with the needs of European populations.
Biosistemak, as part of the Advisory Group and representative of health systems research in the Basque Country, is committed to improving European health systems through research and innovative policy development. Ane Fullaondo Zabala‘s leadership in this field is key to ensuring that the solutions and innovations proposed are relevant and effective for regional and local health systems, contributing to the progress of public health not only in the Basque Country, but also at European level.
