11 February: Women as protagonists in science and research

The International Day of Women and Girls in Science is a day that highlights the fundamental work carried out by women in this field.

Every 11 February is the International Day of Women and Girls in Science, a key date to highlight the essential role women in the scientific world

From Biosistemak, we join this commemoration highlighting our work, initiatives and commitments to promote gender equality in science. Our institute has a diverse and committed team, where women have a significant presence.

Biosistemak’s female researchers represent 76% of the research staff, leading crucial projects that address global challenges, such as the improvement of public health, the transformation of the health system and social welfare.

Biosistemak: Commitment to equality

In our institute we work actively to promote an inclusive and egalitarian working environment. Throughout 2024 and 2025, the Biosistemak Equality Committee has organised training sessions aimed at the entire workforce, addressing topics such as:

  • Prevention of harassment at work.
  • Inclusive communication.
  • Introduction to the basic concepts of equality.
  • Inclusion of the gender perspective in scientific and work activities.
  • Protocol against harassment on grounds of sex

These actions reinforce our commitment to gender equality not only as an institutional objective, but as a core value guiding our daily work.

In addition, we continue to encourage initiatives that promote interest in science among girls and young women, ensuring that they have access to equal opportunities to develop as future scientists.

Inspiring new generations

From Biosistemak, we seek to inspire girls and boys by showing them how women contribute to science, lead research and are references for new generations.

One example is the visit of our colleague and researcher Irati Erreguerena to Ikastola Intxixu in San Inazio (Bilbao) on 13 February. During this activity, aimed at Primary 1 students, Irati will explain what science is, how its practice has a direct impact on our health and wellbeing, and she will highlight the leading role of women in this field.

These activities not only seek to arouse scientific curiosity among girls, but also to break down gender stereotypes and show that girls can lead scientific research and contribute to social progress.
